Once an underwater volcanic region, the Wuyi mountains were formed through high volcanic activity which made the soil very rich and perfect for growing tea. With perfect conditions including being always surrounded by clouds, the tea from these mountains became famous during the Tang Dynasty that many scholars and authors wrote about it. Sent directly to the emperor in those times, it was very precious and worth more than gold. The tea would be wrapped in a thin gold sheet with a picture of dragon and phoenix signifying the preciousness of the tea. This tea now retails at over $3000 per 500 grams in Beijing.
